INFORMATION
In the 1930s, luthiers tried to design louder-sounding guitars that could rise above the sound of ever-growing ensembles and orchestras. Before electrical amplification existed, this had consequences for the acoustic guitar bodies; getting bigger and bigger.
Charles Stromberg and his son Elmer from Boston manufactured the archtop G-1 in 1937 with a body over 40cm/15.7 inch wide. This was the cheapest model of its kind and had a laminated hardwood back. The bracing construction consisted of two parallel beams which were reinforced by three laterally placed beams.
